A funny thing happens to us when we get past our 30′s. Our metabolism which is our body’s engine so to speak starts to decline and our waistline starts to expand. Many people believe that this is just because of the passing years but it is really because you are exercising less (or just not doing enough) and becoming less active.

So you might say “what is the harm in taking a break from my exercise program and letting my belt out a couple of notches?” The problem is becoming less active means muscle tissue is lost and more fat is being added which can really snowball over the years. You can hit mid-life under muscled and over fat which can expose you to all sorts of health risks.

As much as 35-50 percent of muscle tissue can disappear between the ages of 20 and 80 years when you do not use it enough. As you lose muscle mass, you lose all of the calorie burning and metabolic benefits of that tissue which mean less heat and fat burning potential, fatigue problems, immune weakness and a susceptibility to injury.

There is an important ‘youth’ hormone is our body which directs and supports the growth and repair of our cells and tissues. It is called Human Growth Hormone (HGH) and its depletion is a major cause of accelerated aging and premature disease. When levels of this hormone fall the human body weakens, muscle and bone strength is lost, heart and lung power deteriorates, body fat is increased, posture sags, and energy levels are siphoned from us.
.
You do have some control over this process and can increase the levels of this ‘fitness’ hormone naturally to ensure you have both a better quality of health and life. The way to do this is to get started on a proper program of strength training exercise and never stop.

You need to work your muscles directly under a load in a challenging way and they will release this hormone and keep you strong. If you put enough effort (intensity) into your program you will enjoy many positive health benefits. You can easily knock off 10-20 years of disuse both on the outside and inside of your body because you will be making changes right down at cellular level.

You will not get these benefits with any other activity – especially low intensity ‘recreational’ activities like walking, tennis, gardening, or cycling. These activities are great as part of an active and fit lifestyle but do your proper exercise program first and foremost and if you have time and energy left over do your ‘fun’ activities. That is if you want to enjoy increased ‘youth’ hormones that will wipe the years away.

Persuading your body to release its rejuvenation hormones will keep your muscle tissue intact, your bones strong, your metabolism boosted, energy levels will be restored and your body disease proofed. This is all from a simple strength training program performed 2-3 times each week. You will agree, so much to gain from a little outlay of your time and effort.
